Methane is a strong greenhouse gas, so limiting its emissions from agriculture, waste and energy matters a great deal for the climate. Biogas plants can reduce these emissions, as long as they are leak-tight themselves.

Communication COM(2020) 663 announces rules for the energy sector, a plan for agriculture and waste, and an International Methane Emissions Observatory. Biogas and biomethane are identified as a way of reducing emissions.
In a speech at the UN, the Chinese president pledged a CO₂ emissions peak before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060. This is a shift from the earlier pledge of “around 2030”.
Communication COM(2020) 562 proposes a target of reducing net emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared with 1990 and announces a review of the whole energy and climate legislation by June 2021.
Proposal COM(2020) 80 is to turn the declaration of December 2019 into a binding provision. The Commission also announced that by September 2020 it would present a proposal for a new 2030 target.
Communication COM(2019) 640 set out a plan for the EU to achieve climate neutrality in 2050 and announced a series of acts: from the climate law to strategies for agriculture and the circular economy.
In November 2019 New Zealand passed the Zero Carbon Act with a separate target for biogenic methane: −10% by 2030 and −24–47% by 2050 relative to 2017.
