Biomethane is biogas cleaned of carbon dioxide and impurities to a quality close to natural gas. It can be injected into the gas grid or used as a transport fuel.

The MOL Group started up its first biomethane plant in Szarvas, Hungary: an expansion of a biogas plant with an upgrading module will replace more than 7 million m³ of natural gas per year. The feedstock is meat industry waste and animal manures.
On 25 September 2026 the Agro-Biogas agricultural biomethane plant was started in Komorów (Ostrów Mazowiecka municipality): about 20 GWh of biomethane per year from manure and slurry, injected into the PSG grid; sales are handled by Axpo under a 20-year agreement.

NFOŚiGW has launched the second call under the FEnIKS programme (RES Development) with a pool of PLN 300 million: PLN 200 million for biomethane plants and PLN 100 million for biogas plants. Applications can be submitted until 30 April 2026.
POB report from the end of 2025: 122 biomethane projects in preparation, about 815 million Nm³ per year, mostly 1–5 MW. Spain’s Biorig announced 20 biomethane plants and more than PLN 1.5 billion of investment.
On 18 November 2025 the Latvian government approved a EUR 21.5 million support package for biomethane production: a capital grant of up to EUR 4.2 million per applicant, plus ALTUM loans and guarantees.
On 9 September 2025 Polska Spółka Gazownictwa announced the start-up of a biomethane plant at the Südzucker Polska sugar factory in Strzelin – the first in the country connected to the gas grid. Surplus biomethane reaches the grid through a 9-kilometre pipeline.
The operator Nedgia (Naturgy) has connected to the grid a biomethane plant in Cabanillas in Navarre: injection capacity of 320 Nm³/h, up to 22 GWh a year, with feedstock mainly pig slurry. It is the 12th injection point on the Nedgia (Naturgy) network in Spain.
A Blunomy report for Energy Networks Australia (31 July 2025) estimates the biomethane potential at about 400 PJ per year; the first 50 PJ could cost AUD 10–27/GJ.
