The top-up to the price of electricity from biogas in Slovakia lasts 15 years. The 2026 purchase price is, according to SBA, EUR 194–208/MWh, but the fuel cost correction in 2026 is negative (−EUR 21.29/MWh).
The EBA and GIE published the European Biomethane Map: installed capacity of 8.2 billion m³ per year (up by more than 1 billion m³, 17%), 1,975 installations and investment commitments up to EUR 36 billion.
The substrate market in Poland is shaped by competition for silage, a growing supply of biowaste and the development of biomethane. The KOWR register shows about 209 agricultural biogas plants in May 2026.
The Italian system: from a EUR 280/MWh tariff for plants up to 1 MW, through the gap after 2016, to FER 2 (EUR 233/MWh for biogas up to 300 kW) and minimum guaranteed prices for older biogas plants.
On 25 June 2026 the European Commission announced the Biomethane Mechanism – a free platform matching buyers and suppliers, a dashboard of national rules and an investment conditions tool. Registration opened on 18 June; the first round was then announced for September (see the update).
One of the first Czech biogas plants ends its support period on 21 August 2026. The municipality expects revenue to fall by at least 2 million Kč a year and criticises the modernisation conditions.

On 21 April 2026 the EBA published a report: biomethane potential in Europe in 2030 is 34–35 billion m³ (less than previously), 116–132 billion m³ in 2040 and up to 205 billion m³ in 2050. The reason: projects are being launched too slowly.
Hungary supports electricity from biogas and biomass through METÁR (premiums awarded in auctions), the old KÁT system for existing installations and a five-year brown premium.
On 24 March 2026 European industry associations published the Joint Biomethane Declaration with ten priority actions. The REPowerEU target is 35 billion m³ of biomethane by 2030, while production is about 22 billion m³ of biogases.
In Slovenia electricity from renewables and cogeneration is supported by a scheme managed by Borzen: guaranteed purchase or an operating premium. Biogas receives on average about EUR 151/MWh.
In February 2026 the Bundesnetzagentur announced tenders for more than 1 GW: 726.7 MW for biomass and 300 MW for biomethane. The price cap for biomethane was raised by 10% to EUR 0.2313/kWh because the 2025 round received no bids.

According to reports on the EBA report, Europe produced about 5.2 billion m³ of biomethane in 2024 (4.3 billion m³ in the EU-27). We set the data against the REPowerEU target of 35 billion m³ by 2030 and calculate the required growth rate.
