The European Commission has launched the Biomethane Mechanism, which the media reported on 25 June 2026. It is a voluntary platform supporting the biomethane market, operating within the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform. Using it is free of charge. Registrations opened on 18 June 2026.
What the platform offers
According to the description, the mechanism consists of several elements:
- a service matching buyers with biomethane suppliers,
- a regulatory dashboard that collects information on national legal frameworks,
- an "investment conditions" function supporting project development,
- links to local and regional financing.
Participants may be buyers, suppliers and investors. The first matching round was to take place in September; further functions are to be introduced gradually. The article does not explain how demand aggregation or joint purchasing works, does not give volumes and does not link the mechanism to REPowerEU or AggregateEU. The Commission justifies the launch by geopolitical instability and the need to reduce dependence on imports of fossil fuels, and links it to the EU's biomethane ambitions for 2030.
Why it matters
One of the problems of the biomethane market is the lack of transparency: a producer who wants to sell biomethane with guarantees of origin does not know who is interested in buying in another country, and buyers cannot see who can supply gas. A platform matching demand and supply lowers transaction costs, especially for small producers. In turn, the regulatory dashboard organises information on differing national rules – which, according to the industry organisations' declaration of March 2026, was one of the barriers.
Significance for the industry in Poland
For Polish producers who are only now starting injection, the platform is a chance to find buyers outside the country: industry, transport operators, firms buying guarantees of origin. Because the domestic market for biomethane guarantees of origin (run by TGE, the Polish Power Exchange) is shallow, access to EU buyers may improve liquidity. For industrial buyers in Poland – e.g. in chemicals or paper – it is in turn an opportunity to check the availability of biomethane from other countries.
From a regulatory perspective it will matter how the platform copes with certification and avoiding double counting, because the Union Database was still in the process of being launched.
What to watch
The Commission organises the rounds but does not take part in negotiations and does not act as an intermediary in concluding contracts; the platform is therefore not a guarantee of a transaction. It is worth checking the rules and access criteria for producers from countries where support is still being prepared.
