The NewConnect-listed company Global Hydrogen signed a contract on 13 February 2023 to design and build a complete agricultural biogas plant with a target capacity of 1 MW in Markowice in the municipality of Strzelno (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship); the contract value is PLN 15.5 million. The facility is to use SMBP (Self Mixing Biogas Plant) technology.

Contract details

The contract was concluded on a "design and build" basis and covers all disciplines and works needed to complete the facility. According to the schedule described by Gramwzielone.pl, the design documentation together with the building permit application was to be prepared by the end of August 2023, and completion of the investment was planned for the end of 2024. The sources do not indicate a separate investor or the final substrates, so we cannot describe the recipe. The stock exchange ESPI announcement was published under the company's former name, Teliani Valley Polska S.A.

SMBP technology

SMBP is a reactor concept in which mixing takes place without classic mechanical agitators. According to the company's announcements, the exclusive licence, unlimited territorially, belongs to Turbo Green Electric, a subsidiary of Global Hydrogen, which acquired that entity earlier. Public descriptions contain no technical details or operating data, so the assessment of the advantages (lower operating costs, fewer failures) remains the manufacturer's claim.

Market context

According to the National Centre for Agricultural Support (KOWR) register, in November 2022 there were 141 agricultural biogas plants in Poland, and in 2021 there were 116, which shows that the market was growing, albeit slowly. More recent data (as of 2026) are compiled in the article The biogas substrate market in Poland. The Markowice case illustrates a model in which the contractor (a listed company) develops its own technology and delivers the investment on a turnkey basis.

What to watch

  • whether the project obtains a building permit and financing,
  • whether the SMBP technology is confirmed by operating data,
  • what substrates and what process efficiency will be achieved.

Why the information matters for the industry

Agricultural biogas plants with a capacity of about 1 MW are, in Polish conditions, a class of larger agricultural installations. Delivery by a contractor on a "design and build" basis simplifies the organisation of the investment for the client, but concentrates the technological and schedule risk on the contractor. What will matter for the market is whether the announced schedule (documentation and permit in 2023, completion in 2024) is kept and what operating data the self-mixing technology provides.
