At COP26 the Global Methane Pledge was announced: a 30% reduction in methane emissions by 2030 relative to 2020. We explain the pledge, the EU methane strategy of 2020 and the consequences for biogas plants.
On 13 November 2021 the COP26 conference adopted the Glasgow Climate Pact: a call to phase down coal without CO₂ capture, to revisit 2030 targets by the end of 2022, and rules for the carbon market (Article 6).
In small household biodigesters the digestate (bioslurry) is sometimes as important as the gas. Hivos reports that in phase 2 of the ABPP programme more than 300 thousand ha were fertilised with it. What does research say about it and what should one watch out for?
Enzymes, trace elements, biochar, zeolite, microbial preparations. How to assess suppliers' promises and how to design a test that will show the real effect.
On 2 November 2021 the Council of Ministers adopted resolution No. 149 on the Polish Hydrogen Strategy. Targets: 2 GW of electrolysers, 800–1000 hydrogen buses and 32 refuelling stations by 2030.
On 2 November 2021 the Global Methane Pledge was formally launched at COP26. More than 100 countries joined, aiming to cut methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030 compared with 2020.
On 18 October 2021 the Carbon Neutrality Commission approved a target of a 40% emissions reduction by 2030 relative to 2018, and scenarios for neutrality by 2050.
The European Parliament adopted an own-initiative resolution on the "Farm to Fork" strategy with 452 votes in favour, 170 against and 76 abstentions. MEPs backed the ambitions but demanded impact assessments.
Five levels of the hierarchy: prevention, re-use, recycling, other recovery and disposal. We show how Articles 17 and 18 place anaerobic digestion and why this matters in decisions.
Communication COM(2021) 660 of 13 October 2021 sets out short-term aid measures for consumers and long-term actions, including accelerating renewable energy and a review of the gas market.
In dark fermentation anaerobic bacteria produce H₂ from sugars without light. We discuss the microorganisms, process conditions, realistic yields and why the technology is still at the research stage.
On 6 October 2021 gas prices at the Dutch TTF hub reached record levels – over €114/MWh on the day-ahead market, and in intraday futures trading as much as about €155. This changes the economics of biomethane projects.
On 5 October 2021 the President signed an amendment to the Act on Renewable Energy Sources (act of 17 September 2021, Journal of Laws (Dz.U.) 2021, item 1873): FIT/FIP until 30 June 2024, the possibility of extending auctions to 2027 and a licensing threshold of 1 MW.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy published a hydrogen roadmap on 30 September 2021; Law 2099/2021 recognised hydrogen as an unconventional energy source with the incentives of Law 1715.
Thermal hydrolysis breaks down cell structures at elevated temperature and pressure. We explain the principle, typical parameters, the benefits for sludges and the heat balance.
A 2020 SEMARNAT assessment, cited in a UGTO paper, indicates that 46.42% of the waste generated in Mexico is organic waste — a large stream for digestion and composting.
On 18 September 2021 the United States and the European Union announced the Global Methane Pledge: a joint goal of cutting global methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030 compared with the 2020 level.
From the application for connection conditions to acceptance: we describe the stages of connecting a biomethane plant to the gas grid, the analyses of capacity and costs, and the documents that need to be prepared.
Gasification converts a solid fuel into syngas under a limited supply of oxygen. We compare reactor types, discuss the problem of tars and gas cleanliness, and look at what limits commercial deployment.
Mechanical, thermal, chemical, enzymatic, ultrasonic. We compare pretreatment methods in terms of effect, energy cost and application in agricultural biogas plants.
Bogotá's authorities described the biogas recovery system at the Doña Juana landfill: 1.7 MW of capacity, about 290 wells, 11,700 m³/h of gas and a plan to exceed 25 MW by 2022.
The IPCC Working Group I report of 9 August 2021 confirms the unequivocal human influence on the climate and shows that cutting methane emissions quickly slows the rate of warming.
Fermenting slurry prevents methane and N₂O emissions from its storage. That is why RED II gives a bonus of −45 gCO₂e/MJ of manure, which makes it possible to obtain a negative carbon footprint for biomethane.
Regulation 142/2011 sets the hygienisation parameters in a biogas plant (70°C for 60 minutes, particles up to 12 mm), the exceptions, alternative parameters and the microbiological standards for digestate.
