We explain what a covered digester lagoon is, when it works, how it differs from a complete-mix reactor and why it is the most numerous type of installation in AgSTAR listings.
An overview of biomethane support mechanisms in September 2024: a fixed price and coverage of the negative balance up to 1 MW, the NCW in transport, guarantees of origin — and the gaps for larger installations.
According to the Polish Biomethane Organisation, the theoretical biomethane potential in Poland is up to 16 billion m³ a year, realistically about 9 billion m³. In 2023 there were 388 biogas plants and not a single biomethane plant.
We compare hydrogen production pathways from biomass and biogas (dark fermentation, photofermentation, gasification, reforming) and electrolysis in terms of technological maturity, costs and barriers to deployment.
On 15 August 2024 the Egyptian government announced a National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy, which is to add about USD 18 billion to GDP and create more than 100 thousand jobs by 2040.
Two documents often cited in fermentation test reports: the German guideline VDI 4630 and the standard ISO 11734. We explain their scope and why they are not interchangeable.
On 19 August 2024 German Economy Minister Robert Habeck announced a comprehensive biomass package: support for biogas plants is to go mainly to installations linked to heat and operating flexibly.
On Saturday morning, 10 August 2024, the Kiteezi landfill in Kampala collapsed after torrential rain. By Sunday the death toll had risen to at least 23, and the president ordered an investigation.
NFOŚiGW published for consultation (until 18 August 2024) a programme supporting high-efficiency cogeneration from municipal biogas: up to PLN 2.5 billion, including up to PLN 1 billion in grants and PLN 1.5 billion in loans.
On 2 August 2024 the president signed Law 14.948 – the Marco Legal do Hidrogênio de Baixa Emissão de Carbono: a threshold of 7 kg CO₂e/kg H₂, SBCH2 certification and the Rehidro regime.
Connecting a biomethane plant to the gas grid requires an application for conditions, meeting quality requirements and installing a metering station. We describe the stages, deadlines, costs and the division of liability.
On 4 August 2024 four EU acts published on 15 July entered into force: methane regulation 2024/1787, two acts of the gas and hydrogen package (2024/1788–1789) and Industrial Emissions Directive 2024/1785.
Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 requires measurements, leak detection and limits on venting in the oil, gas and coal sector, including for importers. We explain its scope and its significance for biomethane.
In July 2024 the Ministry of Climate and Environment announced an auction-based support system for biomethane plants above 1 MW in the form of contracts for difference for a maximum of 20 years.
How to calculate the maximum yield of CH₄ and CO₂ from a molecular formula or elemental composition. Three numerical examples, the limitations of the method and comparison with the BMP result.
Regulation (EU) 2024/1747 entered into force on 16 July 2024. From 17 July 2027 direct support for new wind, solar and other power plants is to take the form of two-way CfDs. Biogas is not on the list.
NFOŚiGW sent for consultation a draft programme "Improving energy security through the use of biomethane": up to PLN 4 billion (PLN 2 billion in grants and PLN 2 billion in loans) for 2024–2030.
